The Design Support department is an integral part of the design team allowing supportability to be an intrinsic feature of developing Crew Escape and Crashworthy Systems. Design Support’s influence on the design aspects of these Crew Systems has enabled us to develop effective support concepts and methodologies in various disciplines: Reliability, System Safety, Maintainability, Logistics Support, Product Support, Field Service Engineering and Training.

Martin-Baker’s Design Support department offers great flexibility in providing support packages for each individual customer, wherever they are in the World. The support we provide can be tailored to individual customers and has proved successful in numerous operations Worldwide. Through our systematic and formulated knowledge, Contractor Logistics Support and Prime Contractor Support initiatives have been possible. One such initiative is in progress with a major U.S. customer. This operation has augmented an existing support posture to create a ‘hole-in-the-wall’ support concept.

We have designed and developed organic depots for multi-system operations, working with our customers.  Total facility design is possible comprising: seat shops, spares storage and commissioning. We support ‘Affordable Readiness’ initiatives with customers in order to focus on and meet specific budget and availability requirements by the introduction of cost saving and provisioning practices. Information technology advances have recently enabled us to provide a Contractor Integrated Technical Information Service (CITIS) system.  This system allows the customer secure ‘on-line’ access via the Internet to customer owned data and deliverable items.

Martin-Baker provides the maintenance of customer-owned seats either at our Denham, U.K. base, or by our Field Service Engineers at the customer’s facility.  We retain contact with several approved agents around the World, equally capable of providing this function.  Overhaul facilities are available for customer-owned seats which are also able to include upgrades to new standards, or modifications to incorporate new systems.  We provide specialist activities such as mid-life updates for seats to enhance performance and to extend system capabilities.
Martin-Baker continues to support Crew Escape Systems that have been in service in excess of 45 years.

Reliability
Designing for reliability employs a number of techniques including: built-in redundancy and back-ups; analysis and elimination of single point failures and testing including burn-in.
The Reliability team can also adapt their capabilities for any customer, to perform many tasks compliant with Military and Commercial Standards including:
Failure Mode Effects and Criticality Analysis
Full Closed Loop Failure Reporting and Analysis System
Reliability Prediction
Reliability Demonstration
Critical Items Analysis
Marginality of Success Analysis
In-the-field Analysis Capability

System Safety
Our System Safety team ensure the Flight and Operational safety of all Martin-Baker Crew Systems.  By integrating with the design process, intrinsically safe designs are achieved.  This is predominantly accomplished by designing for safety of operation and maintenance actions and in particular, safe installation and removal of seats from aircraft.
Our System Safety team have established hazard control methodologies regulated by all Military and Commercial Standards.  They are capable of performing all the tasks involved and tracking any safety related actions required such as:
System Safety Programme Management
Flight Safety Analysis
Hazard Analysis
Safety Action Recording

Mantainability
Our Maintainability team is dedicated to designing for ease of maintenance.  Integrated with the design function, this has been achieved by employing Military and Commercial Standard techniques and methodologies including, for example:
Maintenance Cost Analysis
Maintainability Evaluation
Maintainability Demonstration
Our Maintainability team works in close liaison with the Testing departments and Field Service Engineers.  This enables quick response to potential problems during development to ensure final designs are proven for ease and safety of maintenance.

Logistic Support
Our Logistics Support team is integrated with the design function to enable effective affordable support of any Martin-Baker product.  They possess a full spectrum capability for all Military and Commercial Standard practices and techniques.  However, their operation can be tailored to meet the customer’s specific needs.  Possessing a fully mobile capability, team members are able to continue active support to the customer in the field.
The team is a World leader in automated system use, being the first to employ this for Logistics Support.  The department has recently developed a CITIS system, which offers full on-line customer support.
The team’s function is analysis based and performs many techniques in supporting all Martin-Baker Crew Systems.  The team can accommodate any logistics requirements to MIL-STD-1388 2B.

Product Support
Our Product Support service provides a complete package to support all types of Martin-Baker Product.  Technical liaison is available throughout the life of the equipment.  This is provided via post design service contracts, which include the compilation and issue of technical bulletins.

Field Services
Our Field Service Representatives and technical liaisons situated around the World provide a quick and reliable response wherever it is needed.  Our Field Service Representatives can provide many services including: accident investigation; help desk and post design support.  They are also in close contact with the Design Support base, enabling immediate graphical interchange and technical consultation between the two.
Field Service Engineers provide on-call, in the field support and are also available to provide in-house training and support around the World, including ejection seat and crashworthy seat retrofit.

Ejection Records
Our Product Support department is also responsible for tracking and collating all Martin-Baker emergency ejection statistics.  Through this effort, the Martin-Baker Ejectee Tie Club has evolved. There are presently over 5,045 members of the Tie Club and each receives a Martin-Baker ejectee tie, silver tie tack, membership card and certificate. Martin-Baker guarantees support for their products for the lifetime of the aircraft in which they are fitted
